But what exactly is a Reed Sensor? It is a magnetic switch that reacts in the presence of a magnetic field. In bean-to-cup coffee machines, it is mainly used for two purposes: to detect the presence of the water level (interacting with the magnetic float in the tank) or to monitor the position of the brew group (encoder/transmission). Without this small device, the motherboard does not receive the necessary information to allow the coffee preparation cycle.

QUESTION: Why does the low water indicator light turn on in my Delonghi bean-to-cup coffee machine?
ANSWER: First, make sure that water is present and that the black magnet moves correctly; you can easily recognize it, as it is a float located at the bottom of the tank inside its own housing that rises and falls based on the water level. Also, check that the tank is intact; there is usually a plastic tab that, if broken, does not allow the coffee machine to detect the presence of the tank. If the problem persists after these checks, it may be caused by a faulty reed sensor.

QUESTION: How do I check if the reed sensor is faulty?
ANSWER: The check is very easy: remove the sensor, place a magnet above it, and use a tester to check the electrical continuity in the two JST connector pins. If the electrical circuit is closed, then the sensor is functioning; if it is open, the sensor definitely needs to be replaced.
