But what exactly is a Reed Sensor? It is a magnetic switch that reacts in the presence of a magnetic field. In bean-to-cup coffee machines, it is mainly used for two purposes: to detect the presence of the water level (interacting with the magnetic float in the tank) or to monitor the position of the brew group (encoder/transmission). Without this small device, the motherboard does not receive the necessary information to allow the coffee preparation cycle.
Symptoms and Diagnostics (Q&A)
QUESTION: Why does the low water indicator light turn on in my Delonghi bean-to-cup coffee machine?
ANSWER: First, make sure that water is present and that the black magnet moves correctly; you can easily recognize it, as it is a float located at the bottom of the tank inside its own housing that rises and falls based on the water level. Also, check that the tank is intact; there is usually a plastic tab that, if broken, does not allow the coffee machine to detect the presence of the tank. If the problem persists after these checks, it may be caused by a faulty reed sensor.
QUESTION: How do I check if the reed sensor is faulty?
ANSWER: The check is very easy: remove the sensor, place a magnet above it, and use a tester to check the electrical continuity in the two JST connector pins. If the electrical circuit is closed, then the sensor is functioning; if it is open, the sensor definitely needs to be replaced.
Expert Tips and Maintenance
To extend the life of your new Delonghi sensor, it is important to understand why these components fail. The number one enemy is moisture. Even though the sensors are insulated, internal condensation or small water leaks can oxidize the electrical contacts or the small internal glass bulb.
Technical Advice: When replacing part 5213217891, ensure that the plastic housing where it is inserted is perfectly dry. Never clean the sensor by immersing it in water; use only a dry cloth or a dry electrical contact spray. This electronic spare part does not require active maintenance but must operate in a dry environment to last for years.
