What is a Thermostat Used For?
The fixed snap thermostat is a critical component inside the coffee machine. Its job is to accurately detect the temperature of the boiler or thermal block. When the temperature reaches the preset threshold (in the case of this spare part 105°C / 221°F and 125°C / 257°F), the thermostat interrupts the circuit, turning off the heating element. This process serves two main purposes: regulating the water temperature for optimal coffee extraction (or for generating steam) and acting as a safety device to prevent hazards due to excessive overheating.
Diagnostics and Symptoms (Q&A)
QUESTION: Why is my Delonghi coffee machine not heating enough?
ANSWER: The cause could stem from various reasons; first, check that it turns on correctly and monitor the operation of the coffee-ready lights (if present). If the coffee machine returns errors or never indicates that it has reached the temperature, the thermostat is likely faulty or miscalibrated.
QUESTION: The coffee machine heats but the temperatures seem wrong, why?
ANSWER: If the water comes out too hot, the problem could be caused by limescale buildup in the boiler which, by shielding the aluminum and acting as a thermal insulator, prevents the sensor from reading the correct temperature, causing the heating element to heat more than necessary. Try performing a descaling; you might resolve the issue without disassembling the machine. If the water comes out lukewarm, the opposite problem may exist, which can be resolved by applying a thin layer of thermal paste between the boiler and the thermostat.
Maintenance Tips and Longevity
To extend the life of the new thermostat and your Delonghi coffee machine, maintenance is key. The number one cause of thermostat failure is limescale. Limescale buildup on the boiler acts as an insulator, forcing the thermostat to operate at higher temperatures than necessary or delaying heat reading, leading to premature burnout. Perform regular descaling cycles using specific products. Additionally, always check for any internal water leaks that could oxidize the thermostat contacts.
Service Center Tips
When replacing a contact thermostat in a coffee machine, always remember to replace and reapply thermal paste. Clean the remaining thermal conductive paste in the boiler with a cloth and solvent, and apply a drop of new thermal paste to the new thermostat you are going to replace. This thermal conductive cream is essential for allowing accurate temperature reading and preventing the thermostat from failing prematurely. You can find a wide variety of thermal pastes suitable for this purpose available in our shop.
Installation Instructions
Before proceeding with the installation of the AS00003360 spare part, it is imperative to disconnect the power plug. Once you have opened the coffee machine casing and located the boiler, you will find the old thermostat fixed in contact with the metal.
1. Remove the connectors (faston) by gently pulling them (mark their position if necessary, although in fixed snap thermostats there is usually no polarity).
2. Unscrew or detach the old thermostat.
3. IMPORTANT: If the old thermostat had white thermal paste underneath, apply a thin layer of conductive thermal paste on the new thermostat before mounting it. This ensures accurate heat reading.
4. Secure the new component and reconnect the wires, ensuring they are tight.
