Collection: Boilers

The boiler is the thermal heart of every appliance that works with heat or steam: it heats the water, generates pressure, and maintains it consistently during operation. When it becomes calcified, burns out, or loses its seal, the appliance stops functioning or operates poorly. With over 100 original boilers in our catalogue, we cover espresso and superautomatic coffee machines, Nespresso and Dolce Gusto machines, electric moka pots, steam generators and irons, and steam mops from leading brands.

Boilers for appliances: models, types, maintenance, guide and FAQ

Boilers for capsule coffee machines

Capsule machines use compact, fast-heating boilers (thermoblock or aluminium boiler). Limescale is the main enemy: it accumulates on the internal heating element, reducing thermal efficiency to the point of complete blockage.

Boilers for espresso and superautomatic coffee machines

Espresso and superautomatic machines have larger capacity boilers (often dual boiler: one for espresso, one for steam). In De'Longhi models, the steam and coffee boilers are separate components with distinct codes.

Boilers for electric moka pots

In De'Longhi Alicia electric moka pots, the boiler is the lower aluminium body that heats the water. It comes in versions for 2, 4, and 6 cups — not interchangeable with each other — and some versions include a reducer funnel for single servings.

Boilers for steam irons and steam generators

In steam generators (Polti Vaporella, Rowenta Perfect Steam, Braun CareStyle, De'Longhi Stirella), the boiler is the pressurised tank with an integrated heating element that produces steam. It is the component most susceptible to limescale and the most expensive to replace: regular descaling is essential to prolong its life.

Boilers for steam mops and Vaporetto vacuum cleaners

In Polti Vaporetto and steam mops, the boiler is a metal container that pressurises the water, smaller than that of steam generators but subject to the same limescale and wear issues of the heating element.

How a domestic boiler works

The boiler of a small appliance is a metal container (aluminium or stainless steel) with an integrated heating element that heats the water. When the water reaches the operating temperature (between 90°C for coffee and 130°C+ for pressurised steam), a thermostat regulates the on/off cycle. In steam generators and professional irons, there is also a safety valve that activates in case of overpressure. In dual boiler models (semi-professional coffee machines), the two boilers operate independently: one maintains the water for espresso at ~92–95°C, while the other produces steam at a higher temperature for cappuccino.

Maintenance and prevention of limescale

Limescale is the main cause of failure in domestic boilers. The accumulation of mineral deposits reduces the heat exchange surface, forces the heating element to operate at higher temperatures, and accelerates degradation. Some practical tips:

  • Using filtered or low hardness water significantly reduces deposits
  • Regularly follow the descaling cycles indicated by the manufacturer (generally every 200–300 cycles or every 2–3 months)
  • In Polti Vaporella generators, use 50% demineralised water with tap water: completely demineralised water is corrosive to aluminium
  • Avoid frequently emptying and refilling the boiler when cold: repeated thermal shocks stress the internal seals
  • If the machine remains unused for weeks, completely empty the boiler to avoid hard-to-remove dry deposits

Most common problems and solutions

Coffee does not reach temperature → calcified boiler or degraded heating element
💧Water leak from the boiler → worn internal gasket or cracked boiler
💨Poor or absent steam in the iron → burnt boiler heating element due to excess limescale
🔴Ready light flashes without reaching temperature → thermostat or boiler needs replacing
Machine turns off by itself → TCO (thermal cut-off) tripped due to overheating
🟤Water or coffee with a metallic taste → internal oxidation of the boiler, replacement necessary

FAQ — Frequently asked questions

Can I descale the boiler instead of replacing it?

It depends on the state of the limescale and the heating element. If the calcification is recent and moderate, a descaling cycle with citric acid or a specific product can restore performance. If the heating element is already burnt out (the machine does not heat at all), descaling is not useful: the boiler needs to be replaced. If the boiler has small leaks or cracks, replacement is the only safe solution.

Is the coffee boiler and steam boiler in De'Longhi Magnifica the same?

No. De'Longhi Magnifica and Perfecta machines have two separate boilers with distinct replacement codes: the coffee boiler (which heats the water to ~92°C for extraction) and the steam boiler (which heats the water to a higher temperature for cappuccino and hot water). It is essential to verify which of the two is faulty before ordering and to order the correct code.

How do I find out the wattage of the boiler to be replaced?

The wattage is often printed directly on the original boiler or in the instruction manual. Alternatively, by searching for the model of the appliance in our catalogue or contacting us, we can verify the original replacement code. It is not advisable to install boilers with a different wattage than the original: this risks tripping thermostats or overheating.

What is the difference between the boiler of a Polti Vaporella iron and that of a Vaporetto?

Vaporella are steam generators for ironing: the boiler is larger (1–1.5 litres), pressurised, with a heating element of 1250–1600W. Vaporetto Lecoaspira are steam vacuum cleaners for cleaning floors and surfaces: the boiler is smaller (0.5–1 litre), with lower pressure and wattage. The spare parts are not interchangeable even though both carry the Polti name.

How long does a boiler in a steam iron typically last?

With average water and regular descaling, an aluminium boiler lasts 5–8 years. In areas with hard water and without maintenance, degradation can occur in 2–3 years. The stainless steel boilers found in professional models last longer but are more expensive. The warning sign is increasingly poor steam production despite descaling: this means that the internal heating element has degraded irreversibly.

Does the boiler of the Krups Espresseria EA80/81/82 also include the piston?

In Krups superautomatic Espresseria models, the heating element/boiler with piston is an assembly that includes the heating element, boiler body, and integrated piston group. In models EA80/81/82, these components are sold as a complete kit. Before purchasing, it is advisable to verify via the code that the kit corresponds exactly to the version of your appliance, as there may be small differences in the connector or piston diameter between production revisions.
