Collection: Filter holder brackets

The filter holder arm is the key component of every espresso coffee machine: it secures the filter in the brewing group, ensures pressure retention, and directly influences the quality of the crema. Whether you have lost the handle, broken the locking mechanism, or simply want to switch to a bottomless filter holder for naked espresso, here you will find the original replacement for your specific model.

Types of filter holder arms

Pressurised (single hole)

This is the most common type found on entry-level and mid-range home machines. The pressurised filter has a single exit hole at the bottom: it autonomously creates the necessary counter-pressure to extract the coffee, regardless of the grind quality or tamping pressure. Ideal for those using pre-ground coffee or ESE pods. It can be recognised by the closed bottom of the basket with a small hole or valve.

Non-pressurised (multi-hole)

This requires precise grinding and proper tamping of the coffee, but offers a technically superior espresso with dense crema and more complex aromas. The bottom of the basket has numerous holes like a sieve. Found on De'Longhi La Specialista machines and other semi-professional models.

Bottomless (naked)

The bottomless filter holder exposes the basket at the bottom, allowing you to observe the extraction flow directly. It is a diagnostic tool appreciated by baristas and enthusiasts for identifying defects in grinding or tamping. De'Longhi offers it for La Specialista also in a version with a wooden handle.

Capsule / pod holder

Some machines (Krups Dolce Gusto, Aroma Egò) use a specific holder for proprietary capsules or ESE pods instead of the classic filter holder. These components have exclusive geometries and are not interchangeable between different brands.

How to choose the correct filter holder

The filter holder is not a universal component: each machine has a specific brewing group diameter (58 mm on professional machines, but 51, 53 or proprietary sizes on home machines) and a bayonet coupling system with different angles. To find the right replacement, you need to know:

  • Exact brand and model of the machine (as indicated on the label on the bottom or back)
  • Replacement part code, if visible on the original filter holder or in the instruction manual
  • Type of filter to use: pressurised single hole, non-pressurised or pod holder

If in doubt, contact us with the brand and model: we will guide you to the correct purchase.

Care and maintenance of the filter holder

A poorly cleaned filter holder compromises the taste of the coffee and accelerates wear on the components. Here are some practical tips:

  • Rinse the filter holder under hot water after each session, removing coffee grounds from the basket holes
  • Disassemble and clean weekly with a suitable brush for the filter holes
  • Perform a backflush monthly (only on machines with a solenoid valve) with a specific detergent for coffee groups
  • Replace the brewing group gaskets if water leaks appear between the filter holder and the group: gasket wear causes the filter holder not to latch correctly
  • Avoid washing in the dishwasher for models with handles made of composite material or wood

Most common problems and solutions

💧Water leakage around the filter holder → worn group gasket
🔒Filter holder does not latch or turn → broken latch or swollen gasket
Coffee comes out too fast or without crema → worn pressurised filter
🟫Coffee grounds in the cup → basket holes clogged, insufficient cleaning
⚠️Handle broken or cracked → complete replacement of the filter holder
🔧Filter holder not compatible → check diameter and coupling system of the model

FAQ — Frequently Asked Questions

Can I replace the pressurised filter holder with a non-pressurised one?

It depends on the machine. If the brewing group has a compatible diameter and coupling system, it is technically possible. However, on entry-level machines, the pump is calibrated to work with the pressurised filter holder: switching to a non-pressurised one may yield disappointing results if a quality coffee grinder is not also used. On De'Longhi La Specialista, the transition is designed by the manufacturer, and the non-pressurised filter holder is available as an official replacement.

Are the De'Longhi Dedica and Icona filter holders interchangeable?

No. Although both are De'Longhi, the Dedica (EC680/685/785) and Icona (ECO310/EC190/EC220) filter holders have different diameters and coupling systems. You need to order the specific filter holder for your series.

What is the difference between a single cup and a double cup filter holder?

The filter holder is usually sold with either one or two baskets: the single basket (for 1 cup, ~7 g of coffee) and the double (for 2 cups, ~14 g). The body of the filter holder is identical; only the supplied basket differs. Some filter holders are sold without a basket, which must be ordered separately.

How can I tell if the problem is with the filter holder or the group gasket?

If water leaks out sideways between the group and the filter holder during extraction, the cause is almost always the worn group gasket (a rubber ring that seals), not the filter holder itself. If the filter holder does not latch correctly or turns freely, the problem is wear on the bayonet coupling system on the filter holder itself. In service centres, both are often replaced together in one operation.

Is the bottomless filter holder compatible with ESE pods?

No: the bottomless filter holder is designed to use ground coffee with a non-pressurised basket. For ESE pods, a specific pod holder with a bottom is required. Always check compatibility before purchase.

My Ariete Retrò 1389 filter holder has a specific colour: do I need to order the exact one?

Yes, for the Ariete Retrò 1389 model, the filter holder is available in different colour versions (green, beige) that correspond to the colours of the individual machines. Ordering the wrong colour version does not compromise functionality, but it will appear visually inconsistent.
